Ten-Year-Old Math Prodigy Enrolls in University

Esther Okade, a 10-year-old Nigerian girl, plays with Barbie dolls and watches Disney cartoons just like other girls of her age. The only difference is that Okade has been admitted to college – one of the youngest university students in UK. She enrolled in the Open University three weeks ago and is studying to obtain her undergraduate degree in mathematics. She is at the top of her class after earning a grade of 100 on a recent test.

Okade had harbored dreams of attending college since she was 7 years old. Her mom Omonefe recalled, “She would say, ‘Mom, when am I starting?’, and go on and on and on. Finally, after three years, she told me, ‘mom I think it is about time I start university now.'”

Okade applied in August last year, and after a phone interview, an essay and a math exam, she finally got the news in December that she had been accepted into the course.

Okade has dreams of obtaining a PhD, running her own bank, and becoming a millionaire.

Okade is not the only academic prodigy in her family. Her younger brother could join her in college soon. At the age of 6, her brother, Isaiah, is already studying calculus.
